Last week, you wrote a poem. This week, I want you to look at the words you used. How did you describe the subject of your poem? Did you use a lot of descriptive words, or not very many?
Then, think about other descriptive words you could use that have the same meaning. For instance, there could be:
“in,” “inside,” “within”
“black,” “inky,” “dark”
“soft,” “smooth,” “velvety”
“strange,” “curious,” “odd,” “weird,” “unusual,” “different”
After making a list, look over the new words you’ve found. Different words can suggest different meanings. I find that sometimes I prefer one word over another based off the sound itself; the meaning alone isn’t as important as making the words flow the way I want them to. Do some of the new words fit better than the one you used? If so, you can change it. If not, why do you like your word better?
